    [:en]Relais _ Fondamenta Gallery Rome[:it]Relais _ Fondamenta Gallery Roma[:]

[:en]A journey 40 images long where 4 different visual and technical ways blend: Angela Di Finizio and Eleonora Pecorella that shoot in colors, Australian Jim Griffith and Turkish Ferhat Celik working in black and white. This encounter has been possible because they share the same interest in reading, understanding and proposing their own interpretation of the present through places and people met while travelling in more or less remote destinations, from the distinctive habits of Japan to the sidereal stretch of Mongolia, from the exotic and colored Vietnam to the more common manner of the western, such as the American or European.

“Photography is a transmission that like a tide rises almost to the Empyrean or plunges down to the hulls and bilges of life. In the first case, photography almost forgets its own material origin and introduces us to pure, disinterested, virginal contemplation. As such, it has the extraordinary cathartic power to shake the mind clear of temporary concerns, facing up to existential misery but able to transcend it.

In the second case photography becomes professional reportage, with its own technical and professional dignity, providing tools to unravel and evaluate the needs, troubles, tangles of life. But around this Manichean divide we have forgotten the intermediate shades between résis, the act of testimony, and escape into the infinite. All these shades are clearly countless, range from the mundane and the celestial. It is up to us to discern and seek what among such a multitude of proposals better suits our nature and aspiration. […]

These four photographers are not a team, sharing the same goals, and this is all to the advantage of their individuality, their respected origins, and their emotional and intellectual ambitions.

What unites them is their professionalism, their pleasure at being surprised by places and people, and their ability to react creatively to the existential impulses built up across time and in the instant, each in a totally personal mode.

Many of these photographs are simply splendid, and we should contemplate the entire corpus with interest and admiration.”

(“Getting Acquainted in Tokyo” by Enzo Bilardello, from the exhibition catalogue).

Behind the Portrait – Gulf Photo Plus

[:en]On the opening night of the exhibition Behind the Portrait on September 13 at Dubai’s centre for photography Gulf Photo Plus a selection of my Women’s Energy portraits will be projected on video 🎥🔝

“As our world becomes increasingly saturated with images, virtually every meaningful moment from birth to death is captured on camera, be it on video, mobile, digital, or film. This abundance of imagery, and the fleeting moments with which we consume it, can cause us to lose sight of the story and the emotions behind each image.

For our annual community show, Behind the Portrait, we asked photographers to submit meaningful portraits accompanied by a short story revealing the narrative behind the portrait. Over 500 images were submitted by photographers based in 35 different countries including many contributions from individuals based here in the UAE and the Middle East. The final selection surveys work from 37 different photographers, combining images with text and video. With each story, the viewer is encouraged to gaze deeper into the life of the subject, and the moment in which it was captured.

The exhibition features the work of 38 photographers, including: Adeolu Osibodu, Aisha Jemila, Altamash Javed, Altamash Urooj, Ayman Khaled, Cheb Moha, Conel van Zyl, Daniele Casciari, Eddie Ryan, Eman Ali, Fabian Muir, Griselda San Martin, Hussain Al Moosawi, Ilaria Di Biagio, Jalal Abuthina, Joan Lobis Brown, Joshua Sariñana, Karen Dias, Katarina Premfors, Lamya Gargash, Laramie Shubber, Maha Alasaker, Martin Beck, Md. “First and foremost, photography is a medium – a means of communicating observations, conveying experiences, and connecting; both with others, and with the world around us. In an age when there is often concern that digital technologies are in fact distancing us from reality, and disconnecting us from one another, it is remarkable to see precisely how powerful the medium of photography can be in terms of transcending the virtual. Because it is both common and fundamentally dependent upon the real – upon time, light, and physical matter – even at its most experimental, photography allows us a uniquely compelling opportunity to directly engage, empathize, transmit, translate, and reflect upon the multifaceted nature of the human experience, in all of its diversity and complexity.

The sequence and selection of images presented here, chosen from an impressively wide range of submissions made to LensCulture, represents many ways in which we connect – physically, emotionally, genetically, culturally, technologically, spiritually, and otherwise – to one another via the photographic medium. Furthermore, when seen collectively, what is truly remarkable is that these connections are not only made between the subjects themselves as they interact before the camera, or between the photographer and their subject matter as the photograph is made, but are able to reach beyond both the captured moment and photographic act itself, and involve us – the viewer – in deeply effective, profound, and personal ways. Collectively, CONNECT is an attempt to draw together, arrange, organize, and interpret a dynamic profusion of images that – despite their broad subjective, conceptual and aesthetic variations – all successfully strive to connect; to “bind, tie, [and] fasten” us together.”  —Aaron Schuman

About this Exhibition and the LensCulture Network

What is photography, really, but a means to communicate and connect? Between the photographer and the subject, between the image and the viewer, from a culture far away to wherever we are, between a moment in the past and now.

Earlier this year, we launched the LensCulture Network with the idea of offering talented, accomplished photographers a place to showcase their work on a global stage while also giving them a place to share, learn and engage with one another. The LensCulture Network began with a small number of hand-picked members, and we are very excited to watch it grow and evolve as new photographers apply and are invited to participate as members.*

One major component of the LensCulture Network are its juried member exhibitions. Guest-curated by the world’s leading photography experts, these regular showcases offer a vibrant platform for LensCulture Network members to share their work and view it in new contexts alongside other members’ photographs. Our first theme, “Connect”, was chosen to celebrate the launching of the LensCulture Network. We hope it marks a first step in the development of a dynamic and interconnected community of world-class photographers.

The inaugural show was curated by Aaron Schuman, an accomplished curator, author, editor and photographer. His selection contains 100 images produced by 42 different photographers, capturing moments and stories from many locations across the planet. We hope you find this group of photographs thought-provoking and inspiring, and we hope this is only the beginning of the conversation and connections among photographers — and between photographers and the rest of us — in different cultures around the world.

Artists include Emile Mendes, Yohan Forbes, Rachel Wilberforce and Eleonora Pecorella. Sharing their unique views of landscape, exploration and design using light, depth and perspective. Wilberforce’s ‘Mirage’ series of abstracted contemporary landscapes takes the viewer on a journey through the physicality of nature and man’s trace, where she uses landscapes as a metaphor for similarities between (often opposing) continents.
‘London emits blue with a lightning start,’ Emile Mendes curator & photographer provides us with a collection of engaging images that reflect the exhibitions architectural theme. His blue fluorescents across London capture a modern and futuristic environment. Mendes’ images encourage the audience to explore his visionary interpretations of our architectural structures and designs.
Yohan Forbes’ series of images uses cinematic language as he sets out to tell stories and bring his style of photography to the more traditional period of painting. His panoramic images evoke an urge to explore the landscapes throughout his travels of Europe, capturing an atmosphere unique to the photograph’s visual expression. ‘In the realm of quantum physics, observing something actually influences the physical process that is taking place.’ Eleonora Pecorella’s ‘Another Point of View’ explores how environment and surrounding influence our interpretation and expression of the moment. The photographs were taken on her travels throughout parts of Asia and Europe. Pecorella’s observations of architectural interiors and exteriors coupled with a unique photographic style express latitude and thoroughness within each still. Each of the photographers selected for this exhibition present unique expressions within the realms of travel and architecture. Their work highlights modernity’s influence on our natural and man-made environments.
