[:en]Some years ago I was in Turkey with my friends and we took a ferryboat from Istanbul to Büyükada, a small island not to far from the capital, famous for having been a favorite destination since the old time by both artists and aristocracy. There are not motor vehicles on the islands: once there you can choose either a bicycle or your feet or to take a ride on a carriage (few locals have motorbikes).

Carriages, together with beaches, are now the main attractions of Büyükada. We took a ride heading towards one of the rated beaches. During the ride we were fascinated by blooming pink and orange bougainvilleas and old wood Ottoman mansions that summoned up lavish past glories.

We dropped off at the bottom of the hill, surrounded by a number of high maritime pines, I shot some horses in a very poetic way because that was still my feeling.

But I turned in a while. I realized that even if carriages were clean, bright and colored, horses were stick-thin and you could feel drivers were very poor. We started walking into a very hot street crossing what it looked like a rigged up shelter for horses, close to a warehouse where they fixed or built carriages. When we arrive at the bottom of the street I couldn’t go forward to the beach, I felt too uncomfortable to enjoy the place despite what I had seen. I took an appointment with my friends and decided to walk back alone and release my disappointment taking photos.

Photography can be a very good way to fix a point in what it’s going on, because it’s exactly what it’s about: to fix an images of reality. And it can be therapeutic to put it there, instead of keeping it just for yourself.

I couldn’t feel worse, the poetic atmosphere of the ride, all our laughings and appreciations about the place were disappeared, leaving a sense of pain for such a misery. I walked up the street, entered in the warehouse, and had a chat with the man who was working there. He was very shy and polite.

Then I went out and took photos of the shelters, a big open air ground with barracks around it, w horses resting over a very dirty soil under the hot midday summer sun, with ribs in evidence under thin skin, covered with scarves and sprayed with colored strips, all in a very depressive surrounding. I took photos of everything I met. I was very sad about this contrast, those funny colored objects, carriages, and these pitiable beings.

The climax was when I saw a man repeatedly hitting a laying horse with a shovel, to make him get up. There is not judgment in my story, but I want to share the destiny of these poor animals and their owners.

I headed up till the top of the hill, shot some more photos of carriages. This time my eye was completely changed about this vehicles and their meaning. Then I took a ride back to the harbour, silent and alone.

Qualche anno fa ero in Turchia con degli amici e decidemmo di prendere un traghetto da Istanbul per visitare Büyükada, una piccola isola non lontano dalla capitale, famosa per essere stata un destinazione prediletta nel passato sia dagli artisti che dalla aristocrazia. Non ci sono veicoli motore nell’isola: una volta arrivati puoi scegliere di affittare bicicletta, andare a piedi o fare una corsa su una carrozza (solo alcuni del luogo hanno il motorino).

Le carrozze, insieme alle spiagge, sono oggi la maggior attrazione di Büyükada. Decidemmo le carrozze come mezzo di trasporto per raggiungere una delle spiagge indicate dalla nostra guida. Durante la corse rimanemmo piacevolmente affascinati dall’esplosioni rosa e arancione delle buganvillee in fiore e dalle vecchie dimore ottomane in legno che rimandavano a un lussuoso e glorioso passato.

Una volta giunti in cima alla collina scendemmo, circondati da boschetti di pini marittimi, dove io mi fermai a fare qualche foto di cavalli lasciati liberi nell’area, cercando di evocare uno stile poetico così come mi ero sentita durante la strada per arrivare fin lì.

Ma rapidamente il mio umore cambiò. Realizzai che, nonostante le carrozze fossero pulite, lustre e colorate, i cavalli erano veramente magri e si evinceva facilmente la povertà dei loro guidatori. Iniziammo a camminare in una strada infuocata dal sole che attraversava quello che sembrava essere un arrangiato ricovero per cavalli, vicino a un magazzino dove si aggiustavano o costruivano queste carrozzelle. Quando arrivammo alla fine della strada sentii che non potevo proseguire per la spiaggia: mi sentivo troppo a disagio per andare a godermi il mare nonostante quello che avessi visto. Presi appuntamento con i miei amici e decisi di tornare indietro e cercare di sfogare il mio disagio facendo delle foto.

La fotografia può essere una buona maniera per fissare un punto in ciò che sta accadendo, perché è esattamente quello di cui tratta: fissare un’immagine della realtà. E può risultare terapeutico mettere il punto fuori, invece di tenerselo solo per sé.

Non potevo sentirmi peggio: l’atmosfera poetica della corsa sulla carrozza, le nostre risate e gli apprezzamenti per il posto erano scomparsi, lasciando un senso di pena per quella miseria. Mi incamminai in salita lungo la strada, entrai nella rimessa e comincia a chiacchierare un po’ con l’uomo che stava lavorando. Era molto timido e educato.

Dopo proseguii per il ricovero dei cavalli, un’ area all’aperto con delle baracche sui lati, gli animali intenti a riposare in un grande terreno che era un vero letamaio di feci e sporcizia sotto il solleone di un mezzogiorno d’estate, con le costole che spingevano da un sottile strato di pelle, ricoperti di ferite e spruzzati con delle strisce colorate, il tutto in un’atmosfera davvero deprimente. Ho fatto foto di tutto quello che vedevo Ero molto triste per il contrasto che vedevo tra le carrozze, oggetti buffi e colorati, e questi poveri animali.

Il climax l’ho raggiunto quando ho visto un uomo che ripetutamente picchiava un cavallo steso a terra con una pala per farlo alzare. Non c’è giudizio nel mio racconto, ma volevo condividere il destino di questi poveri animali e dei loro padroni.

Ritornai in cima alla collina e feci qualche altra foto alle carrozze. Questa volta il mio occhio era completamente cambiato rispetto a come osservava questi veicoli e al significato loro attribuibile. Poi presi di nuovo una corsa verso il porto, in silenzio e da sola.
