    “First and foremost, photography is a medium – a means of communicating observations, conveying experiences, and connecting; both with others, and with the world around us. In an age when there is often concern that digital technologies are in fact distancing us from reality, and disconnecting us from one another, it is remarkable to see precisely how powerful the medium of photography can be in terms of transcending the virtual. Because it is both common and fundamentally dependent upon the real – upon time, light, and physical matter – even at its most experimental, photography allows us a uniquely compelling opportunity to directly engage, empathize, transmit, translate, and reflect upon the multifaceted nature of the human experience, in all of its diversity and complexity.

    The sequence and selection of images presented here, chosen from an impressively wide range of submissions made to LensCulture, represents many ways in which we connect – physically, emotionally, genetically, culturally, technologically, spiritually, and otherwise – to one another via the photographic medium. Furthermore, when seen collectively, what is truly remarkable is that these connections are not only made between the subjects themselves as they interact before the camera, or between the photographer and their subject matter as the photograph is made, but are able to reach beyond both the captured moment and photographic act itself, and involve us – the viewer – in deeply effective, profound, and personal ways. Collectively, CONNECT is an attempt to draw together, arrange, organize, and interpret a dynamic profusion of images that – despite their broad subjective, conceptual and aesthetic variations – all successfully strive to connect; to “bind, tie, [and] fasten” us together.”  —Aaron Schuman

     

    Meet CONNECT Curator, Aaron Schuman

    Aaron Schuman is an American artist, writer, editor and curator based in the United Kingdom. His photographic work has been exhibited internationally, and is held in many public and private collections. He is the author of FOLK (NB, 2016), and has contributed texts to a number of books, including Alec Soth: Gathered Leaves (MACK, 2015), Vision Anew (University of California Press, 2015), The Photographer’s Playbook (Aperture, 2014), and Storyteller: The Photographs of Duane Michals (Prestel, 2014), amongst many others.

    Schuman regularly contributes to magazine such as Aperture, Frieze, Foam, Hotshoe, TIME, and more. Additionally, Schuman has curated several major exhibitions, including Mixtape(Riga, 2016), In Appropriation (Houston Center for Photography, 2012), Other I: Alec Soth, WassinkLundgren, Viviane Sassen (London, 2011), and Whatever Was Splendid: New American Photographs (FotoFest, 2010). In 2014, Schuman served as Curator of Krakow Photomonth 2014 – entitled Re:Search, the main programme featured major exhibitions by Taryn Simon, Trevor Paglen, Jason Fulford, Clare Strand, Walker Evans & David Campany, Thomas Keenan & Eyal Weizman and others. Schuman is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton and the Arts University Bournemouth, and is the founder and editor of SeeSaw Magazine.

    About this Exhibition and the LensCulture Network

    What is photography, really, but a means to communicate and connect? Between the photographer and the subject, between the image and the viewer, from a culture far away to wherever we are, between a moment in the past and now.

    Earlier this year, we launched the LensCulture Network with the idea of offering talented, accomplished photographers a place to showcase their work on a global stage while also giving them a place to share, learn and engage with one another. The LensCulture Network began with a small number of hand-picked members, and we are very excited to watch it grow and evolve as new photographers apply and are invited to participate as members.*

    One major component of the LensCulture Network are its juried member exhibitions. Guest-curated by the world’s leading photography experts, these regular showcases offer a vibrant platform for LensCulture Network members to share their work and view it in new contexts alongside other members’ photographs. Our first theme, “Connect”, was chosen to celebrate the launching of the LensCulture Network. We hope it marks a first step in the development of a dynamic and interconnected community of world-class photographers.

    The inaugural show was curated by Aaron Schuman, an accomplished curator, author, editor and photographer. His selection contains 100 images produced by 42 different photographers, capturing moments and stories from many locations across the planet. We hope you find this group of photographs thought-provoking and inspiring, and we hope this is only the beginning of the conversation and connections among photographers — and between photographers and the rest of us — in different cultures around the world.

    “Innanzitutto e per prima cosa, la fotografia è un medium – un mezzo per comunicare osservazioni, trasmettere esperienze e connettere. In un’epoca in cui c’è spesso la preoccupazione che le tecnologie digitali ci stiamo di fatto allontanando dalla realtà, e che ci stiano disconnettendo uno dall’altro, è rimarchevole notare quanto potentemente il medium della fotografia possa essere uno strumento per trascendere il virtuale. Perché la fotografia è contemporaneamente sia comune che fondamentalmente dipendente dal reale – attraverso il tempo, la luce e questioni materiali – anche al suo livello più sperimentale, essa ci concede un’opportunità unica di coinvolgerci direttamente, di enfatizzare, trasmettere e riflettere sulla sfaccettata natura dell’esperienza umana, in tutta la sua diversità e complessità.

    La sequenza e selezione di immagini presentate qui, scelte da un’impressionante ampia quantità di partecipanti fatti a LensCulture, rappresenta molti modi in cui ci connettiamo – fisicamente, emotivamente, geneticamente, culturalmente, tecnologicamente, spiritualmente e in altri modi – uno con l’altro attraverso il medium fotografico.     Marettimo was  2nd Place Winner Merit of Excellence of the Sport category at the 9th International Color Awards plus Sorrento #2 had an Honorable Mention in Aerial category ( 1 0f 19 HM).

    5,678 entries were received from 78 countries and my work received a high percentage of votes overall. Certainly an achievement, well done!

    The Jury represented the industry’s biggest names and tastemakers including Contrasto, Rome; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Whitechapel Gallery, London; DDB, Berlin; Forsman & Bodenfors, Gothenburg; Art Beatus Hong Kong; DB Agency, Milan; InStyle Magazine, New York and Kunst Haus Wien, Vienna who reviewed the entries online before making their nominations and honoring 591 title awards and 634 nominees in 33 categories. The Awards could not have wished for a better group of professionals to work with.

    “It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the 5,678 entries we received this year,” said Basil O’Brien, the awards Creative Director. “Eleonora Pecorella’s Marettimo, an exceptional image entered in the Sport category, represents contemporary color photography at its finest, and we’re pleased to present her with the title of 2nd place Winner Merit of Excellence.”

    “The variety of entries was astonishing,” said juror Lilli Langenheim, Senior Art Director of DDB Berlin. “Some of the work is truly powerful; Fine Art, Sport, Nature in professional was really inspiring and the Wildlife category in amateur was one of the most exciting,” added jury member Daria Bonera, Owner of DB Agency in Milan.

    [:en]In this time of image proliferation, widespread obsession for selfie, hard competition to find some space to be seen shown and sold, where we can travel or at least have easily contact with the rest of the world, I’ve asked myself: which is the place of the photographer?

    Which is the place of the photographer while he’s captured by reality and feels the need to make his recount? When he enjoys art or when he himself tries to create it? When he simply wants to show and tell his everyday life? Where am I, myself, when I feel touched by other cultures and I try to understand and express this feeling? Where am I when I feel overwhelmed by the hyper-production and I meet this kind of global and contemporary issue?

     

    [:it]In questi tempi di estrema proliferazione delle immagini, ossessione diffusa per i selfies, strenua competizione per trovare lo spazio per essere visti, mostrati e venduti, dove possiamo viaggiare o per lo meno entrare in contatto facilmente con il resto del mondo, mi sono chiesta: qual è il posto del fotografo?

    Qual è il posto del fotografo quando è attratto dalla realtà e sente il bisogno di farne la sua personale narrazione? Quando fruisce l’arte o quando lui stesso prova a crearla? Quando semplicemente vuole mostrare e raccontare la sua vita di tutti i giorni? Io stessa, dove sono quando mi emoziono davanti alle culture di altri paesi e provo a comprendere e esprimere questo sentimento? Dove sono quando mi sento sopraffatta dalla iperproduzione e mi confronto con tematiche contemporanee della nostra società globalizzata?

    Aside from being Hollywood royalty with dozens of films under her belt, Jamie is the author of 10 children’s books, an avid collector of photography, and perhaps less publicly known, a photographer of 30 years. She has judged numerous photography shows, and acted as curator for the Frostig Collection’s 2013 photography exhibition, as well as curator for an advance preview of 2015’s Paris Photo Los Angeles.

    [:en]Guatemala is a country quite famous for its colourful traditional fabrics and the more infamous civil war that damaged mainly the poor people – as usual I may say- most of all originally Maya. My mind always brings together colours with playfulness, maybe because in Italy we have black for mourning, white for wedding and all other colours free of meaning. 36 years of civil war – born into the well-known interlacing interests of economic and power in between North, Central and South America (see Operation PB Success) – which finished in 1996 only, cannot leave smiling people on its way, even if they wear colourful clothes…
    It has been the first time that I have seen a policeman with a tommy-gun inside a church while Mass is being celebrated. Of course I couldn’t resist asking him to model for a picture, I didn’t want to forget it and he silently accepted but not inside the church.
    Guatemalans don’t seem to have recovered from their recent history yet and what it has brought in the present time. But the country still remains a place to visit for hundred reasons.     [:it]Il Guatemala è un paese piuttosto famoso per i suoi tessuti tradizionali molto colorati, e la meno famigerata guerra civile che ha danneggiato principalmente la popolazione piu povera, come sempre oserei dire, la maggior parte di origine Maya. La mia mente associa sempre i colori con l’allegria, forse perché in Italia si usa il nero per il lutto, il bianco per il matrimonio, mentre i colori sono liberi da altri significati. Ma 36 anni di guerra civile, nata dai ben noti interessi economici e di potere che legano il Nord, Centro e Sud America (cfr Operation PB Success), che è finita solo nel 1996, non possono lasciare sulla loro strada gente sorridente, anche se indossa vestiti colorati…

    Per la prima volta in vita mia ho visto un poliziotto con un mitra impugnato dentro una chiesa mentre si celebrava la messa. Di certo non potevo resistere a fargli una foto, non volevo dimenticarlo, e lui, silenziosamente, ha accettato di essere il mio modello, ma non dentro la chiesa. I Guatemaltechi non sembrano essersi ripresi dalla loro storia recente e dalle conseguenze sul tempo presente. Ma il paese rimane un luogo da visitare per mille altre ragioni. Con un turismo consapevole e rispettoso si contribuisce con il proprio denaro al suo sviluppo e in cambio si riceverà una grande lezione sulla storia del XX secolo dal miglior insegnate di sempre: la VITA.

    Windows

    Windows are like living being’s eyes, breaks into the building’s texture that recount the story of those who lives there or has hung out at. They sway in between the open invitation to share intimacy and the fastened banishment of a separating screen. They are like our country’s borders, dictating halt or hinting at a welcome. Anyway, they always preserve marks of who has passed there.

     

     

     [:it]Le finestre sono come gli occhi degli esseri viventi, cesure nel tessuto degli edifici che raccontano le storie di chi le abita o le ha frequentate. Oscillano tra l’aperto invito alla condivisione dell’intimità e il serrato allontanamento dello schermo che separa. Sono come i confini tra le nostre nazioni, impongono l’alt o accennano il benvenuto. Sempre, comunque, conservano la traccia di chi vi è passato.

    [:en]A visual reflection about animals in captivity, following the transformation of old recreational zoos into a committed to conservation and education places, now paradoxically passed off as loyal tools to preservation.
    Today animals are still in cages, no matter how natural they look like.

     

    [:it]Una riflessione visiva sugli animali in cattività, susseguente la trasformazione dell’idea originaria degli zoo come spazi ludici e di divertimento, in luoghi devoti alla conservazione e all’educazione, oggi paradossalmente spacciati come strumenti leali alla preservazione. Ma gli animali vivono ancora in gabbia, non importa quanto naturale questa possa sembrare.

    I’m in the awards with my self-portrait series Alter-ego winner of a third place in People – Self Portrait Category.

     

    [:it]Dopo il successo del MIFA 2014 e la mostra che si è tenuta a Mosca presso la FotoLoft Gallery a ottobre 2014 e in seguito ai numerosi feedbacks positivi di fotografi da più di 80 paesi del mondo, l’organizzazione del premio è lieta di organizzare una nuova mostra dei lavori dei vincitori a Bangkok  presso la Rooftop Gallery, Thong Lor soi 14, 28 maggio – 4 giugno 2015.

    La mia serie di foto Alter-ego ha vinto il terzo posto nella categoria People – Self Portrait Category .
